Wine and Sustainability on Kangaroo Island
Yale Norris and Jacques Lurton, the passionate forces behind The Islander Estate Vineyards, are leading the way in sustainable and regenerative viticulture on Kangaroo Island. Nestled amidst the island's stunning landscapes, The Islander Estate isn't just producing beautiful wines; they're actively contributing to the island's long-term health.
The Islander Estate Vineyards embraces organic and regenerative principles across their three Kangaroo Island vineyards. This translates to a complete absence of chemical sprays, replaced by innovative methods like using cover crops to manage weeds, improve soil health, and support biodiversity.
Sustainability extends beyond the vineyards at The Islander Estate. Their 280-hectare Kohinoor Hills property boasts a third of its land dedicated to protected remnant native vegetation. Acquired in 2000, this commitment to conservation ensures a habitat for native flora and fauna.
Collaboration is key for The Islander Estate. They actively partner with the Kangaroo Island Landscape Board on vital watercourse protection projects, ensuring the health of the Cygnet River that flows through their estate. Such initiatives demonstrate their dedication to a thriving ecosystem.
The 2020 bushfires significantly impacted the estate. However, the team didn't shy away from the challenge. Partnering with the Landscape Board and Retallick Viticulture on the EcoVineyards project, they're actively regenerating affected areas. This includes incorporating native insectary plants, fostering a more sustainable future for the vineyard and the environment.
Yale and Jacques believe in transparency. Visitors are actively connected to the winery's sustainability efforts during hosted wine tastings. Additionally, their social media platforms and content development consistently highlight their commitment to regenerative practices.
Yale and Jacques, are proud Island Guardians. Their dedication to organic and regenerative viticulture goes beyond producing excellent wines. It's about ensuring the long-term health of the land and the unique ecosystem of Kangaroo Island. "Tourism for Good" isn't just a slogan to them. They believe it's about appreciating the unique place Kangaroo Island holds in the world. Visitors are offered an opportunity to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with a simpler way of life. It's about valuing quality over quantity, where the passion and principles behind a product shine through – principles that embody sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The Islander Estate Vineyards stands as a testament to the power of responsible tourism. By prioritising sustainability and actively contributing to Kangaroo Island's well-being, Yale Norris, Jacques Lurton, and their team are inspiring others to embrace a more regenerative approach to travel and hospitality.
