Graham and Deb, Ocean Yakka Eco Lodge
Ocean Yakka, nestled on Kangaroo Island's eastern coast, is more than just an accommodation lodge; it's a haven for conservation and sustainable practices. Graham and Deb Davies, the owners of Ocean Yakka, embody the spirit of an Island Guardian, deeply committed to preserving the island's unique ecosystem.
Ocean Yakka sits on 100 hectares of pristine bushland, with an additional 7 hectares dedicated to the lodge itself. Conservation is deeply ingrained in their philosophy. They are actively involved in revegetation efforts, implementing a comprehensive weed control program, and utilising camera traps to monitor wildlife activity. They also actively participate in Birdlife Australia programs, contributing valuable data to national bird conservation initiatives.
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the Ocean Yakka experience. The lodge minimises its environmental impact through the use of off-grid power sources, including wind, solar, and battery power, supplemented by a rarely used backup generator. They prioritise water conservation through rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling.
Graham and Deb understand the importance of connecting guests with the natural environment. They encourage exploration of the surrounding bushland and provide opportunities to learn about the unique flora and fauna of Kangaroo Island.
Graham emphasises the importance of being responsible stewards of the land. "We recognise that we are fortunate to have this 100-hectare piece of land... This land can be enjoyed and appreciated, but it needs to be looked after and preserved," he explains.
Ocean Yakka exemplifies "Tourism for Good" by prioritising conservation, minimising environmental impact, and fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the natural world. Graham and Deb demonstrate that sustainable tourism can thrive alongside environmental stewardship, creating a positive impact on Kangaroo Island for generations to come.
